A flash of gold appeared at the top of the ledge, glowing from a stray ray of sun that wandered into the cave. Wrenstar let her voice echo into the cave, bouncing off walls, and into tunnels and caverns. "Let all old enough to catch their own fresh-kill, join here beneath the High Ledge for a Clan meeting!"
A river of multi-colored pelts streamed out of the tunnels and dens, positioning themselves beneath the tall ledge. They anxiously pricked up their ears, waiting for their sandy-colored leader to speak.
Wrenstar waited until every cat was there, then began to speak. Her amber eyes blazing down from the ledge, shedding a warmth to her Clanmates. "By naming a deputy, we are assuring that Echoclan will remain strong," She let her eyes scan the crowd as they yowled with agreement. "I say these words before StarClan so they may hear and approve of my choice. A cat who will lead this Clan once my time has ended, and will continue to nurture and keep it strong." She let her eyes fall onto the calico pelt. "Longstride will be the new deputy of Echoclan!"

Copperfur turned his head to view the young she-cat's face. He knew that although Longstride was ambitious, that she would make a splendid deputy, and later on, a leader. He chanted the name with his Clanmates, "Longstride, Longstride, Longstride!"

A small calico was silent for a moment, a feeling of surprise and shock momentarily taking over her mind. Her as deputy? She was hardly a warrior! /Unexpected, though certainly not hated./ she thought, eyes flashing with excitement.
The she-cat stood, lifting her head with pride. For a moment she stood silently amongst the Clan, proud as she could possibly be. "Cats of Echoclan. This is an unexpected honor I did not expect to have the pleasure of recieving. However, I, Longstride, will do my very best to serve you all until I take my dying breath." Longstride meowed. She then dipped her head deeply to the cats, feeling her heart soar in the unexpected victory.

Wrenstar leaped from the ledge, and landed gracefully at the bottom, although she had just fallen the height of two twolegs. The lioness-like she-cat padded over to greet her new deputy. She touched noses with her friend, and knew that she'd feel more confident as leader with a cat she trusted beside her. She let her amber eyes dart to the mouth of the Main Cavern entrance. Reaching inside were the first rays of dawn, and she smiled. The dawn of a new day, and the first in many of Longstride's future.

Copperfur turned and left the crowd when they began to step foreword and congratulate Longstride individually. He wondered if one day he would be accepted like Longstride, but he silently doubted it.

Longstride dipped her head, feeling warmed inside. A smile had even appeared on her face. Such a rare thing a smile was for this she-cat. Her serious attitude usually shined through more often than not. The lithe Clan cat turned her head to the entrance of their camp just as the sun had begun to rise. She closed her eyes as a bright beam snuck it's way into the dark gloom. She sighed, her eyes flashing open again. /Time to start a new day./ she thought. The she-cat rose to her feet once more. Just before she started to speak, she saw a figure out of the corner of her eye. She turned and frowned, but the warrior was already being swallowed up by the shadows. /Who was that?/ she wondered.

ooc: It's amazing that he are able to keep a thread going with just a deputy, a warrior, and a leader.... we need more members!!!! - he-he Wrenstar dipped her head to the fallen leaf-colored she-cat, and made her way to the fresh-kill pile. The warmth and sweet sent went up into her nose, making her mouth water. She picked up a plump vole, and made her way over to a jumble of rocks by the cavern wall. Almost inhaling her food from hunger, Wrenstar watched at the cats began to ease away, and spread back into tunnels and dens. The dawn patrol returned, and with them more fresh-kill. Although plenty of prey had been found, Wrenstar was concerned if they could last the rest of leaf-bare with plenty prey. Some of the prey was skinny, but not enough to start worrying about. *** Copperfur let his paws guide him into the depth of the tunnel that led to the warriors' den. Conversations were being spoken, although a heavy silence still filled the air. He easily sniffed out his nest, and curled, tucking his nose beneath his tail-tip.

Longstride turned to the cave entrance where a patrol was just entering. As she padded toward them, the weight of her new responsibility hit her. The she-cat froze, thinking about this clearly. It would be quite hard, and difficult. But there were many rewards as well.
Deciding the rewards outweighted the difficulties, the she-cat took a deep breath and continued moving. Her paws made no sound as she silently approached Wrenstar, taking comfort that this cat was a close friend. She dipped her head to the strong she-cat before meowing, "Wrenstar?"

Wrenstar raised her head, amber eyes gleaming. She noticed the questioning look shed by Longstride, and cocked her head. "Yes, what is it Longstride?"
She caught sight of an apprentice trotting into the cave with a silver fish dangling from his jaws. He tried to raise his head in pride, but the fish was too heavy. He half-carried, half-dragged the fish over to the fresh-kill pile. Wrenstar almost laughed, but she snapped her head back to Longstride. She listened for what the she-cat had to say.

Longstride stared up at Wrenstar, almost in awe of the she-cat as the beams lit up the leader's fur. The deputy blinked, confused for a moment as the beam was suddenly blocked out. The source of this sudden darkness soon became apparent.
"I was going to ask if a patrol was needed, but it seems as if one isn't." she meowed, glancing toward the apprentice as he tried to look proud. This sight was heart-warming, yet it did not draw out a rare smile from the she-cat. Hardly anything did anymore. Her gaze flickered back to Wrenstar before she looked at the fresh-kill pile. /Good./ she thought, noticing it was stocked up.

Wrenstar nodded, "at sunhigh you can organize or lead the Noon Patrol. Until then, you can start by making sure the queens and medicine cat are fed. Thanks."
Wrenstar watched as the slender she-cat padded away. Her attitude was something Longstride needed to work on, and patience was critical for a deputy. But Wrenstar knew that Longstride would develop these things as she developed her ability to lead. For she had a great aura of respect toward the she-cat, her friend. Wrenstar finished her vole, and cleared away the remains.

Longstride dipped her head once more before heading toward the fresh-kill pile. She frowned, looking down at the prey. What would be a good choice? The deputy leaned her small head down and selected a rabbit. Though large, she was strong enough to hold it up. Her tail held high, the mult-colored she-cat headed for the nursery. It was a place she visited, but not often. Sometimes the kits were just a bit too bothersome for her.
The soft rabbit's fur was just starting to make her mouth go dry when she reached the nursery. "This is for you." she meowed, forcing her voice to be kind. The she-cat gave the queens a brief smile before ducking out of the cavern. Giving her chest a quick lick, Longstride headed for the fresh-kill pile once more.

Copperfur padded out into the Main Cavern. Not having any lick trying to sleep, he wondered if he could sneak out of camp to get some air. He stopped in the opening to the tunnel, curiously watching Longstride deliver fresh-kill to the cats who needed it. He twitched his whiskers in amusement. Longstride would usually refuse to do such simple tasks, but he guessed she was trying to impress Wrenstar. So he watched as she trotted over to the medicine cat den, letting his leafy-green eyes trace the colors of her pelt. When she emerged, she looked in his direction. He looked away.
He padded toward the tunnel that led up to the dirt-making place, a usual escape route he used when he wanted to be alone.

As she was dropping off the finch at the medicine cat's den, Longstride felt eyes burning into her pelt. She turned around curiously and let her gaze wander over the cavern. Her yellow gaze lingered on Copperfur for a moment as she flicked her tail. /There's just something about that tom that makes me feel.....uh....great! I don't even know!/ she thought crossly, letting out a snort.
The calico drove Copperfur's image from her mind, turning away once more. There were more pressing things that she had to worry about. Lacking anything to do, she headed for the cave entrance and looked outside. The ground beneath her feet turned from stone to dirt as she squinted out into the sunlight. A welcoming breeze blew against her fur, cooling the she-cat.

Copperfur emerged up into the light, and he narrowed his eyes, letting them adjust to the bright beams. When he could finally open his eyes, he trotted out of the small hollow. Slowing his pace, he padded beside the violet-looking willow trunks. The branches usually blocked out the sun, but now bare, they simply reached out, naked. Copperfur let his paws carry him to the border, and he cautiously scanned the cork-screwed trunks that bordered the Gnarled Forest. The roots reached out of the ground like dark fingers, creating a foreboding nature to the forest beyond. He caught sight of a moving shape, but when fixing it with his gaze, he figured it was just a shadow. He could have sworn he sensed another cat, and he continued to peer ahead. He almost gasped when he was fixed with two ghostly green eyes that glared out from the shadows of a bush. He was stuck, and couldn't look away. He was afraid to blink, fearing that the eyes would disappear. But he blinked, and they were gone. The shadows seemed to come alive as a shape moved nimbly away. He stood, flabbergasted by the brief appearance of the most lovely she-cat he had ever seen.

Wrenstar padded over to stand beside Longstride, letting the cool spray of the waterfall dampen her brightened fur.
