Cinderstar sighed as she leaped to a low branch on the tree above her. The branch swayed under her weight for a moment, while Cinderstar tried to keep her balance. Finally, she yowled out, "May all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather for a Clan meeting!" As her words echoed around camp, cats slowly emerged from their dens. As the Clan gathered below her, she meowed out, "It is time to announce a new deputy, far too soon, due to Embersky's disappearance," mummers of shock rippled below her, and were silenced by a flick of her tail. She couldn't help but feel... relived at Embersky's disappearance. "Maybe Embersky's disappearance is a sign from StarClan... maybe not. Either way, I should have appointed this warrior the first time. Sunwing will be the new deputy of Mistclan. May StarClan hear and approve of my choice!" she called confidently into the clearing. Cheers of approval erupted from the assembled group below as Cinderstar leaped down to join in the congratulating
((sorry its short, its late and mom attack and ARG!! ))

Sunwing stood stunned temporarily as the leader called her name. Would she be the right choice to guide the Clan? Could she someday lead Mistclan over new and hard obstacles. As the Clan erupted with cheers she turned to face her Clan, holding her breath. Glancing quickly towards Cinderstar she let her breath go. The leader seemed content with her decision, and the many messages she had already conveyed could only prove it.
Purring from head to tail, Sunwing turned back towards the Clan. Nodding respectfully she caught sight of Fernstep and Brackenstripe who smiled back encouragingly, glancing down quickly in embarrassment. The last time she had been in front of the entire Clan was when she had had her warrior ceremony. It would take getting used to as deputy, but Sunwing accepted it gladly.

Willowears sat outside his den as Cinderstar told the news to the Clan. Curiosity pricked at him, but he ignored it as he walked over to Sunwing. "Congrats, young one!" he purred. It was no secret that he liked Sunwing; she was kind and respectful, and she was fun to talk to when he got lonely. Noticing Cinderstar approaching, he stepped aside. Cinderstar padded up to Sunwing, cats stepping aside to let her through. Gently touching noses with her new deputy, she purred, "It seems the Clan approves of my choice. Its a big responsibility, but I know you can handle it," she smiled, and went to chat with Willowears while the cats said their final congratulations.

Sunwing beamed as both Willowears and Silverstar praised her. She already knew it would be a big responsibility, and would have to clear her mind after organizing the first patrols. It was early, sunhigh, and the sun shone just above the tree dotted horizon. Thin beams of honey colored sun soaked the center of the clearing. A few cats spoke it the clearing, a group of four. Each face held a different expression, and the purrs heard from a distance reassured Sunwing of the Clans state, strong and ready.
It was only a short while after Sunwing was named deputy that she organzied a patrol. Fernstep, Speedstripe, Fernfoot, and Tornheart would both hunt and patrol the borders. Sunwing watched as they padded out of sight before she set out. The forest was afresh with scuttling prey. It was now new-leaf, a gathering would soon approach. She would be going. Although the prey tempted her, Sunwing left it up the skilled patrol the gather it for the Clan.
And she sat, almost in the exact same spot Fernstep had sat not half a moon ago. The creek was oozing to life with gray scales of fish nearing the surface and glimmering at the sun. It was a wonderful day, yet a cold sensation gripped Sunwings pelt. Untold, and undefineed.

Brackenstripe emerged from the mass of pelts; fully healed. He gave Sunwing a friendly pat on the shoulder with his head. He twitched his alabaster whiskers in happiness. "I knew Cinderstar would pick you! You'll be a great deputy as long as you don't turn grumpy like Embersky." His eyes twinkled with humor as he nodded to her, and padded away.
He let his gaze wander back to Sunwing as she was being congratulated. A warm surge pulsed through his pelt at the sight of her slender, golden pelt. He shook the feeling away, and continued to pad over to the fresh-kill pile.

A rather large form stalked through the undergrowth, braken cracking beneath the feline's paws. The feline's eyes darted around the small clearing, watching only for prey. In the background she could hear the voices of the rest of the patrol. Only moments before had she seperated from them, claiming to have smelled rabbit. /I hope I wasn't wrong./ the she-cat thought, her tail lashing. It would be quite embarassing if she didn't find anything. This warrior was not known for her hunting skills.
The brown cat froze as a small mouse appeared at the base of a tree. It sat there, seemingly unaware of the she-cat that watched it.
Fernfoot lowered herself, belly scraping the ground. She began to creep forward, placing each foot on the ground oh so carefully. The only thing she wasn't careful about proved to be her downfall: Her tail. As it moved back and forth, it stirred up leaves behind Fernfoot. She hissed; now she had lost the element of surprise. Leaping forward, Fernfoot was dismayed to see that this small catch had slipped away into hiding. "Foxdung!" she spat, her tail still lashing as she sat up straight. That might have been one of the only catches they would have today, and she had ruined it....again.

A muffled laughter was heard from behind Fernfoot, and Sunwings sleek red coat appeared from behind a thin layer of trees. Sunwing took her time approaching the dismayed she-cat, picking her steady route of small ferns and growing flowers. When she was less than a fox-length away from Fernfoot she stopped and curled her tail delicately around her two front paws. "Not a hunting day?" she asked, "All the prey is a little bit skittish after the long winter hibernation."
The sun rays peeked through the thick canopy of branches and new leaves. Although the cool air still had a tang of winter within in, the sun and new prey offered the Clans a warm sense of comfort. They had survived yet another winter, and would survive the winters yet to come.

Fernfoot turned to Sunwings with a smile. The she-cat let out a laugh, eyes brightening. "You have that right Sunwings. Prey does seem skittish. It's to be expected though." she meowed. The warrior dipped her head suddenly, remembering Sunwings new rank. "Oh....Congratulations on the deputy position." she added somewhat akwardly.
Oddly self-consious, the she-cat dipped her head and gave her messy brown-shaded fur a few licks. Her tail tip twitched, one of the signs of her rare nervousness.

Sunwing smiled, "Thank you Fernfoot."
A hint of embarrassment was hinted with the beautiful she-cats congratulations. Sunwing paused to study Fernfoot, who now licked her pelt. "Fernfoot," she said calmly, "Being deputy doesn't change anything. I'm not going to act any different, and you don't have to all the sudden respect me more than you have."
And Sunwing meant it. The one thing she didn't like about being deputy, would be the way the cats looked at her differently. She would rather have members of Mistclan treat her the same, but she would have to accept that every rank was treated differently. Her tail swished nervously when thinking about it, but she steadied herself quickly.

The brown cat stopped in her grooming as she heard Sunwing's words. Deep inside her, she knew that the deputy was right. However, it was odd for her not to act this way.
Fernfoot took a deep breath. "I know that Sunwing. It's just.......It feels odd not to." she explained. The she-cat kept her gaze up, her mind swirling with thoughts. She was a warrior, yes, but that didn't mean that she was calm and brave all the time. Oh no. Not at all.

Sunwing sensed Fernfoots heart pounding. She knew Fernfoot was uncomfortable with the conversation and didn't want to prolong it. "I understand. Just think of me as Sunwing, the old one."
Sunwing had known Fernfoot since she was born. Fernfoot was an older apprentice when she was born, and often snuck into the nursery. She remembered the devastating death of Fernfoots brother Pebblepaw, and had sympathy for her. But Fernfoot was older than her, and having her suddenly treat her different not only made Fernfoot feel awkward, but Sunwing as well.
Sunwing decided she might as well leave it at that, and studied her surroundings. Prey scuffled under leaves, and the warm sun brought jays out between branches. "Lets catch something!" was her exited conclusion, she was starving and wanted to spend some fun time with her old friend.

Fernfoot blinked as a sudden shaft of light hit her in the face. She looked down, feeling her fur momentarily warming up due to the sun. She tilted her face uwards, claws digging into the root she was sitting on. She felt as if she could sit there all day. But, even as she heard the scufflings, she knew there was work to do.
The she-cat smiled at Sunwing's offer. Her friend always knew how to brighten a situation. "Hopefully I'll do better than a three-legged rabbit this time." she meowed, laughing.

Sunwing laughed with Fernfoot. It seemed like forever since she had last hunted without caring one bit about what she was doing, without having any worries on her mind. The sun was high in the sky, and the canopy above the area the two she-cats ran through was thin. Sunwings eyes were bright, there was no dull reflection to them, only the warm essence of the sun.
A small squirrel scampered around the roots of a tall tree. Its mouth was full of the fresh acorns it had just collected. Sunwing gestured to Fernfoot to stay quiet with a flick of her tail, and instantly crouched low. Her belly almost brushed against the dry earth, and her ears pricked keenly forward. The squirrel was now a few fox-lengths away, no sign of danger reached its ears. Sunwing sprang, her sleek and elegant figure carving a wide yet balanced curve in the air. The squirrel dropped the acorns and began to make a run for it, but Sunwing was faster. She landed with a delicate thud, a limp squirrel in her jaws, her eyes focused intently upon Fernfoot. A wide smile broke from her lips, looking funny with a squirrel within her jaws.
Dropping the squirrel she dug a small hole by the white roots of a paper tree, and gestured to Fernfoot to go on ahead. They would need to catch more prey before heading back towards camp.

The feline had watched with intense intrest as Sunwing brought prey down with ease. Her eyes widened; if only it was as easy for her. She smiled as the squirrel caused Sunwing to have a slightly odd look. This was not a look she was used to. Dipping her head as she caught the signal, Fernfoot stretched and headed off through the undergrowth.
The brown cat had not gone far before she heard the scufflings that annouced the presence of prey. She smoothly slid into a slightly familiar hunter's crouch, straining to catch sound of the prey once more. There! She spotted it!
A small sparrow was hopping along the ground, searching for a worm to catch for breakfast. Intent on it's quest, the sparrow was not alert to any danger. Fernfoot crept forward, strong muscles sliding back and forth with ease. The she-cat paused as the sparrow tilted it's head. Her mouth watered; she had not eaten since before dawn. There was a bit of hesitation before she sprang, claws extended. The sparrow had no warning.
Fernfoot's claws had quickly ended the sparrow's life as they dug deep into it's flesh. The warrior let out a kit-like purr of pleasure as she realized she had actually caught something. "Yes!" she meowed, filling with delight. She quickly buried the prey, then continued with her search, determined to catch more.

When the hunt was over, both Sunwing and Fernfoot had to take two trips to bring the fresh prey back to camp. Their excitement at the surplus of food had them catching more and more, but they had finally stopped when they realized there was also a whole hunting patrol. The Clan was well fed, and would not be hungry for a long time.
Fernstep bounded up to Sunwing and Fernfoot with bright eyes filled with delight. Her delicate paws seemed to dance across the clearing rather than run. Her soft cream-white fur and brown mask and boots seemed to glow from other the early evening sun. "Looks like you caught the entire forest," she mocked swishing her tail towards the huge fresh prey pile.
