Cinderstar rested atop the High mound, watching activity beneath her. Though in a relaxed position, it was clear she was attentive and alert by the way her eyes shone and her tail flicked back and forth, back and forth. She sighed to herself. They needed more warriors, and they had no medicine cat yet. StarClan will send warriors and a medicine cat soon she soothed herself. She stilled her twitching tail as she began to remember kits playing in front of the nursery, warriors sharing tongues, the smells that drifted from the medicine cats den, elders telling apprentices stories. But lately, all she heard was the sound of her few warriors awakening and going about their daily duties. She watched a small patrol walk in with a few pathetic pieces of prey, the price of leaf-bare. She followed their movements as they dropped their prey on the pile, and settled down for a good washing. She didn't move, except for her ears swiveling, trying to catch a sound from the past. Maybe father would like something she thought, perking up. But before she could rise, one of the warriors carried a scrawny vole to the elders den. The action also reminded her they needed apprentices as well. Be patient Cinderstar. Everything will be fine, as long as you have faith in StarClan this thought calmed her, and she went back to her surveillance of camp.

A small rabbit lay beneath bushes of twigs, cleaning its face with its small paws. Suddenly its ears perked up, swiveling one way and another. But before it had a chance to turn it’s head it lay limp in the dead ferns.
Sunwing beamed proudly once again. Her second piece of prey, and porbably the last piece of prey she would catch that morning. Overhead few chirps of leaf-bare birds called to each other. If only she could jump high enough to catch them. But she pushed the dream out of her mind and carried on eith her task. Uncovering the small thrush she had caught earlier from the cool and damp earth, she held both in her jaws and ran lightly back to camp. Her steps joyful, almost as if she were dancing.
Sunwing stepped through the undergorse carrying a small rabbit and thrush. The hunting was scarce, and what remained was almost skin and bones. The better bargain of this case was the fact that they only had a few cats to feed. Would their Clan be like this forevor? Would Mistclan suddenly fade, as if no Clan ever existed. Trying to make the best of it she padded up to Cinderstar. Her gray pelt glowing slightly beneath the thin light of the morning.
Placing the rabbit by her leaders paws she cocked her head. Cinderstar had b een so concerned about their Clan. But soon there would be kits, apprentices, and plenty more warriors. Not long, she thought. “Cinderstar, the prey is low, but we assure you there is enough to feed the Clan,” Sunwing had led the patrol, and each warrior had brought atleast two pieces of prey back. Infact, the amount of prey they had to share fit their Clan perfectly that morning.

Cinderstar snapped back to attention as Sunwing, who had lead the morning hunting patrol, deposited a rabbit at her paws. "Thank you Sunwing. It seems you all did well for leaf-bare. Im sure all will be well with the Clan for now," she said cooly with a slight nod.Sunwing is a loyal cat. Well liked and respected, and I stil need a deputy... she pushed the thought of out her mind. She needed to really think about such matters. "Sunwing, I hate to ask you but could you check on Willowears for me?" she asked poiltly and casualy. "I do believe he's already been feed but still... you don't have to. Im asking just as a favor," she added. "You did very well. Thank you again," she sadi, indicating the rabbit. She slowly began to eat the rabbit, and suddenly found herself famished. She finished the rabbit in a few eager gulps, and leaped down from the High Mound, attending to her duties

Sunwing nodded and skipped off towards the elders den. She was willing to complete a favor, there was nothing else to do at the moment. Sunwing visited the elders often, making sure the elders were comfortable and fed since there were no apprentices to do this task.
Willowears was a respectable cat and although an elder still somewhat good looking and active. He would fight if needed and often completed a few of his own chores. After all, it wasn't as if elders were helpless. As Sunwing entered the warm elders den she caught site of the faded gray and brown tom. His white chest and paws contrasting with his green eyes.
Placing the skinny thrush lightly by his paws she touched noses quickly with him and took a step back. "Are you doing well?" she asked them this as a tradition. Every time she made her way into the elders den she greeted him with this simple phrase. Now it came automatically to her tongue and she almost had no consciousness of her saying it.

Willowears looked up as Sunwing entered. She greeted him with her ususal phrase. "Im doing well, Sunwing. Thank you," His usual reply. "And thank you for this lovely thrush," he said, digging in. He ate slowly, talking to Sunwing between bites. "So how was the patrol?" he asked. "Im hoping it went well. When need all they prey we can get this leaf-bare," he added. His long, willowy tail wrapped around his paws as he finished the thrush, settleing down for a small chat.

Sunwing purred, it always warmed her to help someone, and receive praise in r return. Easily answering the elders second she changed positions, sitting up straight with an orange tail wrapped around her front paws.
"The patrol found enough prey to feed us. Although the prey is bony, it is sufficient enough for us."
Sunwing often chatted with Willowears, bringing up many small talk conversations. It was easy to talk to him, sometimes about Cinderstar, and most other times about hunting.
"Although, Cinderstar is worried about the Clan. Willowears" she paused for a breath, "how will we get more Clan members? Will we have to accept every rogue, kittypet, or loner we can find to restore our Clan again?"

"I remember a rather harsh leaf-bare. There was no prey on the pile for 2 days..." he started before realizing Sunwing had asked him a question. "Hum? Oh. Well thats all up to Cinderstar," he said after a moment. He felt the normal warm glow of pride that his daughter and apprentice was now leader of the Clan. "I think we'll get some more warriors but it will take some time. Maybe not as fast as the Clan would like, but it'll happen" he added. "For now, lets not worry about it. Do you have anyting else to do? I'd hate to keep you from your duties," he said. He was not dissmissing her, just making sure the Clan came before him.

Sunwing shook her head, there was nothing in specific that she had to do although she could always volunteer for a border patrol. After thinking for a bit she turned to look at the elder, "I should probably complete a few more tasks that might need to be done at some point. Willowear, I'll check on you later," she turned without a response and walked towards the clearing of camp. Feeling slightly guilty for leaving Willoear she sat down and picked a small mouse from the pile.
As soon as she began eating she realized how starving he was, she hadn't eaten since the previous day. Engulfing the mouse it looked more like she was inhaling it.

Willowears rose, and stretched. Slowly, he padded out of the den and blinked in the sun light. Yawning, he settled himself in front of the den and began to give himself a through wash. Looking up, he watched his daughter sit up, assessing the Clan below her. Noticing he had moved, she jumped down from the High Mound.
Cinderstar stretched, and walked over to her father, Willowears. "I assume Sunwing took care of you?" she asked kindly. "Why yes. Nice cat, Sunwing" Willowears mused as he swiped his ears. "Why, if I was a few moons younger..." he joked. Suddenly, he turned very serious. "You need to pick a deputy before long. What if you were suddenly unable to preform your tasks as leader? You need someone to take your place," he said, twisting around to clean his back while keeping his eyes on her. Softer, he said, "Plus, I cant tell you have been rather stressed lately. You need someone to help take the load off your shoulders," he added. "Sunwing seems like a good cat. Loyal, strong, respected... this is all up to you, of course" he finished. "I know. Thank you for your concern, father. I will picked someone soon," she promised. Giving him an affectionate lick, she left Willowears to his washing. Grabing a scrawny vole, and sat in front of her den to eat.

Cinderstar keeped her word. Through her meal, and through the rest of the day, she thought about her choices. Finally, the sun set and the moon rose high in the sky. Its now or never, Cinderstar thought as she leaped on to the Highmound. Though inside she was still unsure, she called out confidently, "May all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather under the Highmound for a Clan meeting!" She watched as cats from all ages assembled under her. "A new deputy must be appointed," she meowed. "I shall now name Mistclan's new deputy. I say these words before StarClan, so they may hear and approve my choice," As she said this, she watched the cats below her quiver in excitment.
"Embersky is the new deputy of Mistclan!" she called out. Her words seemed to echo around the clearing. Slowly, as the words sank in, a few cats went over to congratulate her. Leaping down, she shared a look with Willowears. She longed to see that approving look in his eyes, but instead he just nodded, and dissappeared back into the Elders den. I will speak to him tomorrow, she decided, padding over to her new deputy. "Congrats. Your first job as deputy is the assemble tomorrow's dawn patrol," she instructed the older cat. As she brushed past, she murmered "Dont let me regret my choice," and with that, she slipped inside her den.
Willowears watched Cinderstar announce the new deputy. He himself would not have picked Embersky's unruley behavior, but Cinderstar wasn't around to see Embersky as an apprentice, or as much of her warriorhood. As Cinderstar leaped down from the Highmound, she looked at Willowears for support. Willowears mearly nodded. I am not the leader. These are not my choices to make. I must hope Embersky will change he thought as he dissappeared into Elders den, wanting noting more than to curl up and sleep. He longed for the warriors den, longed for the warmth of several bodies sleeping side by side. But he was an elder now, sleeping alone in the empty den. Eventually, he fell into a fitfull sleep.

Embersky smiled one step closer to achieving our dream, brother She accepted the congratulations of the cats but she felt some unease when she neared the Elders. They don't accept the choice Though Embersky couldn't blame them after all she had been pretty unruly when she first had became a warrior. But that was then this is now, they must accept the facts Resolve rippled through Embersky as she approached her mother.
Flowerpelt turned her head as Embersky approached "Congratulations Daughter." said Flowerpelt slight disdain echoing in her voice. Embersky stiffened She will never accept my choice will she

Sunwing cheered Embersky along. Although a pang of jealousy poked at her faintly. Pushing it away she thought of how Embersky suited their deputy position well. She was quick and making decisions, and would someday make a wonderful leader. After all, Embersky was much more experienced than she, she was older, and surely more mature. She looked back at the croud of few cats slowly spreading out within the clearing. Embersky beamed proudly and Cinderstar looked as if she had made the appropriate choice. Suddenly she caught sight of Willowears, his tail down heavily, and his back turned towards her. Disapointment. Did the elders not accept Embersky? Did they know something that the rest of the Clan didn’t?
Trying not to look as confused as she truly was, Sunwing joined the croud of scattered warriors talking amongst themselves. Each one seemed happy and content, sharing tongues and finding comfortable spots on the cool grass.
