Rosepaw sat in the apprentice den, looking outside. There was a cold breeze floating around, but the sun still shone happily through the sullen clouds. The day was beautiful... cold, but beautiful. Slowly she rose to her paws and padded out of the den. It was early morning, and she could hear the sounds of peaceful slumber around her. It was like magic. She pranced forward and spun around in the middle of the clearing, batting at pieces of dust that were only visible through the suns rays. Breathing in the dawn scents of the forest, she marvelled at the dew drops that blanketed the grass and the sound of birds performing their morning duet. She slipped out of the entrance, her tortishell pelt merging into the forest like rain into a river. There one moment, then gone the next.
Suddenly, she heard a sound behind her. Freezing, she turned and jumped when her mentor softly called 'boo.'
"Mountainheart! I.. uh.. didn't see you there." She said sheepishly, grinning at him.

The tom smiled and padded up to her. "I guessed." He purred, then gestured with his tail back to camp. "Come on, back to camp with you. I want to take you on dawn patrol, so lets get cracking." With that he turned and padded off, reassured his apprentice was following him by the bouncing footfalls that echoed through the forest. He scented the air, then stopped slowly and turned to Rosepaw. "Never miss an opportunity of prey. Smell that?" He asked, talking about the scent of mouse around this area. Rosepaw nodded eagerly. "Lets see how your tracking is. Find that mouse, but remember to be quiet." He watched her eagerly with amber eyes, a smile playing across his face.
Lets see what she can do.

Rosepaw nodded at her mentors words, and scented around. The mouse had been here a few minutes ago but had since gone... She scoured the ground for small paw prints and disturbances in the grass, but she couldn't spot more than normal. A hiss escaped under her breath in frustration, but she calmed herself. It'll be here somewhere, just keep looking. She scented deeply, then padded around. It was definately going off to the east. Stepping lightly, she led the way, listening for the tell-tale scuffles of the mouse.
There! She sighted the small brown shape in the grass among some leaves, nibbling at something. She sunk into a crouch and crept forward, intent on her prey. "Keep your weight centered" came his voice from behind her. She leaned to the left slightly, then leapt at it. In one leap, she cleared the remaining ground and landed on the mouse. She was so surprised at her leap, that her grip relaxed and the mouse managed to wriggle away. She jumped at it once again, but it had already gone. "Mousedung!" She said, staring at the spot where it had gone.

Mountainheart stepped forward to her side and looked down at her. "Good jump! That was the best I've seen you do." His praise was purred as he looked down at his apprentice. "You didn't catch it, but we're not all perfect are we? Come on, lets get back. If we see something else you can try that leap again." He trotted through the forest, his grey fur shining white in the dappled sunlight that fell through the branches.
They reached camp with a vole and a very pleased looking Rosepaw. "Why don't you go and give that to the elders? You've done well. Maybe we could do a patrol later?"
She dashed off to the elders den with such enthusiasm she nearly fell over. Mountainheart purred, then sat down and surveyed the camp. He reminisced over all his years as a warrior. Battles he'd fought, prey he'd caught, cats he'd loved and learnt from. Lowering his head, he realised he was getting old. I wish I had her energy. Its not over yet though.

Rosepaw hurried in and dropped it in the middle of the elders den where they could share it. As she flashed them a smile, she was already turning, ready to go and see if Mountainheart wanted anything. He shook his head, so after his command, she went off to see if she could find Aspenpaw to play. He was a funny cat... didn't talk much. Smiling still, she looked round for him, but she didn't spot his cream and brown pelt anywhere. Screwing up her face crossly, she went to go and sit by her favourite flowers that waved happily to her at the edge of the camp. Her amber eyes raised to the fluffy white clouds bobbing along in the sky. They were so beautiful...
Once again, she looked around the camp for Aspenpaw. Still, she couldn't see him. His mentor wasn't in sight though either, so maybe they were training? She contented herself with that, then started to chase a leaf around camp. Twirling and swirling... jumping and thumping as she landed... batting and patting at it... darting back and forth as she played with the leaf.
