Treepaw emerged from the canopy of trees with a rabbit in his jaws. But his thoughts weren't concentrated on finding prey. Many things swirled through his mind as he padded from under the shadows into the light of the meadows.
Feeling a bit dizzy, he dropped the rabbit at his paws and looked round. Hunger gnawed at his belly and he was so tempted to eat the rabbit. He wasn't meant to be hunting, so it couldn't be that bad, could it? But what would Sootclaw say if he came back smelling full fed with no prey at all? It wasn't exactly if he was in his mentor's good books. He'd been rude to him while training, been sent back to camp but he'd on purposefully disobeyed him and went off by himself.
Sighing, he stood up and buried the rabbit in the soft ground and padded away in search of more food. A flash of fur caught his eye, then he turned round. A rogue crouched by where his prey was buried, half-way through digging up his prey. Treepaw frowned and narrowed his eyes then stalked over.
"What are you doing? Thats my prey!" He hissed, and felt his fur fluff up slightly. The female rogue crouched, her eyes wide and fearful. Treepaw crouched, then straightened again and padded over to her. Walking round her with a thoughtful expression, he couldn't help admire her slim figure despite the ribs sticking out of her pelt and her beautiful and intelligent face.
Sighing, he stepped back. He couldn't hurt her, and she looked pitifully small. He smiled to her, then gestured to the rabbit.
"Go on... I know I shouldn't but you look so hungry." he mewed and shuffled his paws. She smiled gratefully, then kicked the last bits of dirt of the fresh-kill and started to eat. Treepaw sat and watched her gulp hungrily, but elegantly, then stood up and padded away.
"I'm just going to catch something else..." he threw the words over his shoulder then turned his head forwards again and scented the air. He picked up the scent of mouse, then spotted the creature and stalked forwards skillfully and pounced. The mouse squealed under his claws, then fell limp and silent as he bit into it. Treepaw bent his dark head and picked it up in his jaws and returned to where the rogue was still crouched, eating the rabbit. He smiled and settled beside her. She smiled at him after she looked up, then returned to her meal.
Treepaw crept back towards camp quietly, hoping no cat would find him smelling of rogue, mouse and rabbit; with no prey. He gasped as he heard a rustle in the bushes behind him, then recognised the sweet scent of his sister Vinepaw. She frowned at she looked at him and sniffed him.
"Treepaw? Why do you smell of-"
Treepaw silenced her by flicking his tail over her mouth. With wide eyes, he hissed at her.
"Shh! Vinepaw... please, don't tell anybody! I... I know its wrong, but just trust me ok?" Vinepaw's eyes clouded with understanding, then his gentle sister nodded and mewed quietly.
"Go and roll in some fox-dung, that'll wash away the scent."
Treepaw nodded and turned round to go and find some of the smelly substance, but was stopped in his tracks as a patrol emerged from the bushes...
