Darkslash padded behind the young cats, looking all around the forest, in case they were hiding behind a tree. But after tasting the air, he assured himself that they had well and truly gone.
Searching the trees, the thunderpath and the things around it one last time, Darkslash glanced down at Mimi. She was stood stock still, eyes wide. A knife-like feeling of pity raked through him as he looked down at her face, usually sweet but distorted with strong emotions that the dark tom couldn't tell. _____________________________________________________________________
Violent shakes struck Mimi, threatening to knock her unconscious. Dizzily, she stared round at the scene in front of her, as if they might be hiding behind a monster, or magically appear. But there was nothing. They were gone.
With a cry she jumped forward, and started sniffing for them. She looked up at where their scent led, through TwolegPlace and along a run-down track that led to their stinking head-quarters. A deep voice came from behind her barely jolted her back to life. "Mimi?" Darkslash asked, and stepped forward so he towered over her. As if she was frozen, she jerked her head up and looked at him, her face a wreck.
Anger filled her up, along with sadness and disbelief.
They're not gone. They just can't be gone.

Cricketpaw watched in silence as the young kittypet began to dart around, her nose close to the ground. A wave of sympathy overcame the young apprentice, but what could she do? There was no comfort that she could offer or give. Mimi would be too upset to care.
The tabby stepped forward, laying her tail gently on the kittypet's shoulders. Her head turning to Darkslash, she asked sadly, "What now?" It was like any other day, the apprentice asking the warrior in command what to do next. Only this time, the situation was much more depressing.

Darkslash stared around at the scene, eyes narrowed. Gears in his mind whirred as the tom's strategic side quickly surveyed all the options that his enemy could have taken. Think like the enemy. Throwing a dirty look at the ground, he snarled inside at the voice in his head. I thought like the enemy. I killed like the enemy.
Theres no time to waste with thoughts like that. With a pang, he thought of the annoying, but wise, words that his foster mother would have told him in her shrill voice. So he threw thoughts of shame aside and tested the air for the stink of rubbish or rank scent of cats that hung around the clearing, so obviously not the scent that kittypet's carried. It led off further into Twolegplace, much to the warriors disappointment.
With a quick gesture to the other cats, he motioned forward and began to walk, looking out for Twolegs. "We'll see if we can get closer to the cats and cut them off before they reach their camp. But if we can't do that, we'll have to see if we can steal them away. But its unlikely, if those cats are as ruthless and strong as the stories say." He paused as Mimi lowered her head sadly. Feeling bad, he explained his reasons. "We'll be crowfood if we fight all those cats with two warriors, an apprentice and a kit. If we can't steal them now, we'll have to go back and get back-up, then talk to Wrenstar about our options." Darkslash looked at Mimi expectantly, hoping she wouldn't try to rescue them by herself. "We'll get your friends back, I promise."
But what consequences will we face?
